The challenge

Measuring and optimizing sail shape has traditionally required expensive wind-tunnel testing or specialized laser equipment, putting objective sail trim analysis out of reach for most sailors, sail lofts and racing teams.

What we built

We built Sail Shape Plus, a computer-vision application that extracts sail shape from ordinary photos or video. After a one-time camera calibration, it detects sail lines automatically (or lets the user draw them manually), lets trajectories be fine-tuned, and calculates detailed shape data in real time, with an optional plugin to bring in the boat’s live sailing data alongside it.

The outcome

A practical, camera-based alternative to costly lab equipment, now sold and used internationally by sailors and sail lofts — including CAPITANI in Italy — to analyze and improve sail performance on the water.
