IMEDEA

TRASMAR

Monitoring software for an underwater camera that photographs and films fishing nets on the seafloor, 100 metres deep, over many hours.

The challenge

Studying how trammel nets affect the seafloor meant running a camera at 100 metres deep, in near-total darkness, on a precise recording schedule for many hours at a time — and then being able to find and review every clip afterwards.

What we built

We developed the monitoring software that runs the camera: scheduling time-lapse recording with infrared lighting for the dark — for example, five minutes every half hour, for two days straight — plus an easy web interface to manage and access every recording.

The outcome

IMEDEA can deploy the camera again and again and rely on the software to capture and organise every recording automatically, seeing in detail how fishing nets interact with the seafloor over time.
